Testing the Worx Electric Leaf vacuum Mulcher/Shredder (Product Review)

When I was a teen, I used to do yardwork for my neighbors to make money. Having learned responsibility and the value of money this way, I always planned to make my kids do the same thing. So last year, when my daughter wanted to buy tickets for some concert she wanted to attend, I told her that she'd have to work to pay me back for the cost of the tickets. She decided to take one of my suggestions and start a small service mulching the garden debris of our neighbors for a small fee, and then selling the mulch to other people.

Having a relatively large garden, I was on the lookout for a leaf mulcher anyway, and I was glad that I now had someone else who would be reading the manual! After visiting several garden stores and doing some online research, both my daughter and I decided on the Worx Leaf Vacuum Mulcher model WG430. It's a bladeless mulcher that uses nylon trimmer lines to mulch leaves and twigs. I liked this idea because I knew lines would be easier to replace than blades, and my daughter liked the idea because she felt it would be safer than other mulchers. For those who'd like to know, this model comes with a 13 amp motor that can go up to 8,500 RPMs.

We ordered our WG430 off of Amazon.com. It arrived soon after ordering, and with my daughter reading the manual, I was able to assemble it quickly. The package came with the mulcher, 24 replacement lines, and one bag holder. That afternoon, we decided to do a test run on some of the leaves we had gathered a few days before, as well as some of the new leaves that had fallen on the ground.

Wow. I thought they were kidding when this thing said it can reduce a bag of leaves to 1/11th of its original size! I'm not sure if it's exactly 1/11th or if it really is mulching 53 gallons per minute, but our bags of leaves sure got a lot smaller and quickly too! We were able to put three bags of leaves into less than half a bag! Apart from being able to do its job, I really like that this mulcher has a dust-reducing-clean-air-motor-cooling-system, which means you can use it for longer than some other leaf mulchers. Both my daughter and I like that it has a really compact design. She likes it because it makes it easier for her to bring it over to neighbor's houses, and I like it because it makes it really easy to store during the "off season."

The only thing both my daughter and I wish this thing could do better is mulch twigs. Don't get me wrong, it mulches twigs just fine, but doing this really wears down the trimmer lines. If you constantly mulch twigs, be prepared to replace the lines more often than you would if you were mulching leaves alone. Also, there's an area in the trimmer that seems to catch material which then accumulates there, but this is nothing turning it off and a little adjusting doesn't fix it.

Finally, despite the dust-reducing system, it still creates a good amount of dust. I guess this can't be helped. It's a mulcher, after all!
Overall, I'm really happy with our purchase. I know the leaf mulcher will come in handy in the future, and I'm glad that it taught my daughter how to make money. After about two rounds around the neighborhood, mulching people's leaves and creating small bags of mulch for resale, my daughter made enough money to buy her concert ticket. She later helped her friend do the same so that she could buy a ticket too!

Anyone who is thinking of getting the  best leaf vacuum mulcher should definitely consider the Worx WG430. It's compact, fast, efficient, and is worth the money you pay for it! As my daughter proved, you can even make money! Just remember to protect your eyes and ears, and to wear some kind of mask while mulching! Though this is a pretty safe mulcher, it's always better safe than sorry!
